Nestled northwest of Tenerife within the Teno Mountains, Masca emerges as a picturesque and historic village. Its renowned natural beauty and distinctive charm are integral to its identity, as it is located in a remote, mountainous region enveloped by deep gorges and verdant vegetation. Isolation and the rugged surrounding terrain distinctly shape the unique atmosphere of the village.
Further enhancing the enchantment of this locale is Masca Beach. Celebrated for its secluded beauty and captivating views, the beach rightfully claims its position among the finest in Tenerife. Approach the beach either by boat or through a challenging hike, and you will find it nestled in a small bay, surrounded by towering cliffs, creating a tranquil setting.

How to get to the Masca village, gorge and beach?

Masca village, situated in the northwest of Tenerife, serves as the starting point of the Masca Gorge Trail. The beach, located at the trail’s end, can only be reached through hiking or water. While getting to the village is possible by car or public transportation, accessing the beach is limited to hiking or water transport.

BY CAR

Getting there by car might be the most comfortable option, but it’s important to note that the road to the village is winding and narrow. Furthermore, the hamlet has very limited parking spaces. Nevertheless, if you are fortunate, you may discover a spot next to the road. (see map here)

BY BUS

Public transportation would be a good option for reaching the Masca village. You can check bus numbers 355 or 365 to see if they are convenient for you. Alternatively, you can always refer to these websites for bus schedules: TITSA, Rome2Rio, or the Moovit app.

BY BOAT

Reaching the beach by boat is an option, with departures available from both Los Gigantes and Teno. You can check the availability for Los Gigantes here and Teno here.

By kayak from Los Gigantes (& getting back by boat)

Another fun and adventurous way to reach the beach is by kayak and return by boat. You can reserve your spot here.

Hiking details of the Masca Gorge trail in Tenerife

The Masca Gorge Trail starts at the Masca hamlet in Teno Rural Park, beginning at an approximate altitude of 700 meters and descending to sea level. This canyon hike follows an out-and-back route, occasionally offering the option to descend solely and then take a boat to Los Gigantes. In my case, I chose to hike the out-and-back trail (which was still accessible at the time), and the following details refer to this route.

Distance

9,6 km/5,96 mi

Duration

cca. 7 hours

Difficulty

Hard

Ascent

cca. 700 m/2296 ft

Permit to the Masca Gorge hike

To hike the Masca Gorge Trail, a permit is required. This permit was free when I visited, but it now appears to require a fee and must be booked through the official Camino del Barranco de Masca site. Currently, the trail is open on weekends and holidays. The specific opening hours, or more precisely, your starting time, will be provided upon booking. Moreover, note that due to limited availability, booking a ticket in advance, possibly weeks or months ahead, would be a good idea.

For weather and conditions of the facilities, information can be found here.
