Ponta de São Lourenço, positioned on the easternmost point of Madeira, Portugal, stands as a captivating nature reserve celebrated for its rugged terrain, dramatic cliffs, and breathtaking panoramas of the Atlantic Ocean. The hike promises an invigorating journey through this enthralling landscape. Serving as my inaugural hike on Madeira, it proved to be an excellent warm-up for the impending Pico Ruivo trek.

How to get to the starting point and where it is?

The PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço hike begins at Baía D’Abra, situated approximately 32 km from Funchal. The starting point, Baía D’Abra, is conveniently located adjacent to parking lots, which are accessible by both car and public transportation.

BY CAR

If you’ve rented a car, it’s the most convenient way to reach the starting point of the PR8 Point of Saint Lawrence hike. Moreover, the Ponta de São Lourenço parking lot is well-organized; the best part is that parking is free.

BY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

If you choose public transportation, take the SAM No. 113 bus from Funchal to Baía D’Abra, the nearest stop to the reserve. Buses typically operate at regular intervals, and when consulting the timetable, make sure the bus covers the entire route to Baía D’Abra, not just to Caniçal.

BY TOUR

If organizing your trips isn’t your preference and you favour a private tour, you’re in luck because there are many options to choose from.

Best time to hike Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço

The optimal periods for exploring Point of Saint Lawrence are spring (March to May) and fall (September to November), characterized by mild weather and fewer crowds. However, summers (June to August) tend to be busy and hot. On the other hand winters (December to February) bring rain and wind, presenting more challenging hiking conditions.

Nevertheless, it’s crucial to monitor the weather forecast and plan accordingly, as conditions can be pleasant or unpredictable throughout the year. For instance, during our June hike on the PR8, we encountered occasional windy conditions.

The terrain also changes throughout the month, with the landscape transforming into lush greenery after the rainy season, November and February. In contrast, the driest months, such as May and August, showcase a palette of cream and brown hues.
