How to get to Veliko Tarnovo?

Veliko Tarnovo, situated in north-central Bulgaria, is conveniently accessible by car, bus, or train. While multiple transportation options are available, the most convenient and commonly preferred methods are by car or bus.

BY CAR – The easiest way to reach this lovely city is by car. It’s recommended to find a convenient parking spot close to the places you want to visit, as some of the streets are narrow and steep.

BY BUS – Opting for the bus to reach Veliko is another convenient choice, eliminating concerns about parking and driving. Numerous cities are excellently linked to this medieval destination. Furthermore you can easily find various timetables and pricing on platforms such as Rome2Rio, Busexpress and Getbybus.

BY TRAIN – Although train travel is also possible, it typically involves longer travel times and fewer connections than the more efficient car and bus routes.

Navigating by car is not recommended, as many attractions are conveniently situated close to one another. For those arriving by car, it’s advisable to locate a suitable parking area and continue exploring the city on foot. Fortunately, Veliko Tarnovo offers a variety of parking options, including both free and paid lots. During our visit, we opted for the Municipal Parking lot for its reasonable price and convenience.

St. Ascension Cathedral: Veliko Tarnovo’s Spiritual Heart

When exploring the Tsarevets fortress, it’s recommended to pay a visit to the Ascension Cathedral. You can easily spot it on the hill within Tsarevets Fortress, and it stands out as more than just your ordinary church. The structure initially appears like any other medieval church, adhering to Byzantine design principles and crowned with crosses. However, upon entering, the interior reveals a unique character unlike that of any other Christian building.

The cathedral’s history dates back to a Roman basilica built around the 5th or 6th century AD. During the 11th or 12th century, it underwent reconstruction as a monastery church, featuring three naves and a triple apse. Unfortunately, the Ottoman conquest destroyed the medieval cathedral, and it was reconstructed in 1981 during Bulgaria’s communist rule.

Today, visitors encounter frescoes by artist Teofan Sokerov depicting various chapters of Bulgarian history within the cathedral’s walls. Despite reconstruction, the cathedral remains unconsecrated since the 1980s, functioning mainly as a museum. This dual role reflects the complex history and evolving cultural landscape of Veliko Tarnovo.
