Belogradchik Fortress and Rocks: A Hidden Gem Worth Visiting
The Belogradchik Fortress and Rocks is a hidden gem worth visiting for those who are looking for a unique blend of history and natural beauty. Located in northwest Bulgaria, this ancient fortress was built during the Roman Empire for surveillance and later expanded during Bulgarian rule and captured by the Ottomans. Today, it serves as a cultural monument, showcasing the region’s rich history.
How to get to the Belogradchik Rocks and Fortress?
There are a few options available when it comes to getting to the city and the rocks.
BY CAR | In my opinion, the best choice for getting to the Belogradchik Fortress is by car. Not only is it the fastest way to get there, but it also allows you the freedom to not depend on a set schedule. Additionally, since we were already on a road trip, it made sense for us to choose this mode of transportation. To get there, use the location provided, where you will find parking lots located in front of the fortress. However, it is worth noting that parking can be limited, so it is important to choose your arrival time wisely.
BY TRAIN | When it comes to travelling to Belogradchik by train, there are no direct trains available. However, there are three trains per day that run from Sofia to Oreshets. Oreshets is approximately 12 km away from Belogradchik. Therefore, you can take a taxi from the train station to reach your final destination, Belogradchik.
BY BUS | As far as I am aware, there is a daily bus route that departs from Central Bus Station Sofia at 16:30 p.m. However, this might not be the best option as the journey is over 3 hours long and you may arrive at the fortress after it has closed. But, if you choose to spend the night in the city of Belogradchik and get up early the next day, you will be able to arrive before the crowd. It is still a good option to consider.
