How to get to Balos Beach and Lagoon?

Getting to Balos Beach can vary, depending on your location, transportation options, and budget. However, the two most picked options are by boat or by car. The shortest and fastest way is from Kissamos.

If you prefer getting there on land you will have to hike down on a clear trail with steps which might take 20-25 minutes. But you will have that picture-perfect view over the lagoon.

By boat

Choosing a boat trip provides flexibility in selecting from a variety of boat types departing from multiple cities, including Kissamos, Chania, Falasarna, Heraklion, and more.

FROM KISSAMOS

The shortest route is from the port of Kissamos (Kavonisi), which is located in the western part of Crete. In fact, this port is a popular starting point for tourists who wish to explore the beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters of the nearby Balos Lagoon and Gramvousa Island. The road is good until the Balos Beach Hotel; however, from there, there is no paved road available. Soon after, you will reach the ticket station, where you’ll need to pay 1 euro per person. As you continue along this path, you’ll encounter dust, bumpy terrain, and sometimes rocky areas with very little paving. The parking lot is not very large, especially considering the number of visitors, but you can park for free near the lot.

If you’re wondering about the walk to Balos Beach from the parking lot is about 1.40 km and involves uneven terrain and stairs.

By bus

When it comes to reaching the beach, options for buses are limited due to the off-road route required. However, a convenient 4×4 Low Cost Bus Transfer is available from Kissamos to Balos. You’ll find a couple of options for refreshments – there’s a canteen at the parking lot and another at the beach. However, keep in mind that the selection might be a bit limited. To ensure you have your favorite snacks and drinks, consider bringing your own.

As for facilities, there’s a toilet at the beach, which is handy. But do note that it’s not free; there’s a small charge of 1 euro for its use.

If you’re looking to lounge in the sun, there are some sun lounges and umbrellas available. In fact, they were priced at around 15-20 euros for two chairs and an umbrella. It’s a good option if you want some shade and comfort while enjoying the stunning views of Balos beach and lagoon.
