I’ve been to this beach twice while in Crete, and I loved it. The vibe and beautiful surroundings stood out to me. I enjoyed seeing water and mountains together in one place. Although the beaches are small, they’re nice, with soft sand and clear water. I also met some friendly local kids, which made the experience feel more local than touristy.

My Experience

This hidden gem isn’t your typical beach spot. With its dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and secluded shore, it offers a truly unique experience. Although it required a short hike, I didn’t mind at all; in fact, I loved the rocky terrain and pink flowering plants. After the dusty trail, I was greeted by the azure sea and striking rock formations. We arrived early, and it was wonderfully quiet, with plenty of space to sunbathe or find shade. However, as time passed, more people arrived, and the shade became scarce. Just know there are no amenities, so at a minimum, bring water. Finally, be careful with your food if you bring any, because the goats are also happy to come down to the shore.

Stavros Beach: A Cinematic Experience at One of Chania’s Finest Beaches

My Experience

We arrived at this idyllic spot after midday and started with a delicious meal at the restaurant with a beach view. There was a light breeze on the terrace while we waited for the food, but the beautiful sea view, with the dramatic Vardies hill in the background, was incredibly relaxing. This hill is famous for its cliffs and was featured in the 1964 film “Zorba the Greek,” where Anthony Quinn danced the famous “sirtaki.” Afterward, we walked to the beach and took a spot on the left side. One part of the beach has sunbeds and umbrellas, while the other does not. It’s a very family-friendly spot with shallow, gradually deepening water. A great thing that happened was that after a short walk out of the bay to the wilder waters, we encountered quite large turtles.

Pachia Ammos Beach: A Hidden Gem

My Experience

Before heading to Stavros Beach, we first stopped at Pachia Ammos Beach. Imagine a long sandy shore with azure water, dotted with cacti and trees. On the far west side, I noticed some amenities or possibly a resort, and on the east side, closer to Vardies Hill, there were sunbeds visible. However, the stretch of shore in between was all yours. It wasn’t crowded at all—there were fewer than five people, which created a wonderfully relaxing vibe. What I particularly loved were the trees; they lined the shore in many places, providing natural shade, which I found brilliant.

Balos Beach: Iconic Lagoon and One of the Best Beaches in Chania

Balos Beach is accessible by car or boat. It’s a 52 km drive northwest of Chania by car, followed by a 20-minute hike. Alternatively, you can take a boat from Kissamos.

• Activities: Swimming, photography, hiking, exploring the nearby islet of Gramvousa
• Tips: To avoid crowds, it’s best to arrive early. Also, pack your water and snacks since there are few facilities available.

My Experience

We arrived by car, and there were already plenty of others there. You need to pay 1 euro per person to access the unpaved road—this applies if you come by land; arriving by boat is different. After parking the car, we headed to the beach and began the hike. First, you see the hills, and then the lagoon gradually comes into view, revealing more and more beautiful spots as you continue. It’s no surprise this place is featured in so many pictures of Crete—it’s truly stunning with its blue shades, fine sand, and plenty of space. My Experience

Another lovely beach, Elafonisi, stands out for its pure beauty without requiring a hike like Balos or Preveli beaches. However, because of its easy access, you can expect more visitors. It offers organized spots with umbrellas, as well as more relaxed areas. It’s worth exploring around to find some hidden gems, as there are many. My Experience

If Elafonisi Beach, one of the best beaches in Chania, feels too touristy for you, then just a short distance away lies the secluded beauty of Kedrodasos Beach. We visited it after Elafonisi and loved the vibe there. With no amenities, it’s just you and nature. Some people were relaxing in hammocks under the trees, while others had set up tents in the shade, fully immersed in the natural surroundings. I would embrace this experience anytime. It’s also worth exploring a bit, as the area has some truly stunning spots. I caught the golden hour and sunset here, and it was absolutely mesmerizing.

My Experience

We ended up at Agia Roumeli Beach after hiking the Samaria Gorge. Since we had some spare time before the ferry arrived, we took the opportunity to enjoy a meal and explore the area a bit. Moreover, the beach, with its stunning mountainous backdrop and clear water, truly captivated us. It’s definitely worth a visit.

My Experience

Although this beach is on a lake rather than the seaside, it’s still a great spot to relax or have fun in the water. It offers both secluded areas and developed sections. You can lounge on a sunbed and take in the beautiful hills, or get more active by renting water sports equipment.

Georgioupoli Beach: A Tranquil Coastal Haven

Georgioupoli Beach is conveniently located about 40 km east of Chania Town, roughly a 45-minute drive. Public buses from Chania provide regular service to Georgioupoli, particularly during the busy summer season, making it an easy destination to access.

My Experience

Another great setting is the small fishing village of Georgioupoli, which boasts some lovely beaches. The town is very green and has a charming small harbour at the edge of the Almyros River. Near the harbour, a small white church, Agios Nikolaos, is built on a rock in the sea, and from a distance, it looks as if it’s floating. I enjoyed the green spaces, the mountains in the background, and the picturesque shores along the river. I only visited Georgioupoli Beach, but from there, you can find Kalyvaki Beach to the west of the river or Peristeras Beach to the east.
