Seitan Limania Beach, known as Stefanou Beach, is concealed along the northern coast of Crete’s Akrotiri Peninsula in Greece. Notably, it is celebrated for its striking cliffs, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and unspoiled shoreline. The name “Seitan Limania” translates to “Satan’s harbours,” hinting at the rugged and enchanting allure of the landscape. Additionally, the beach is tucked away in a small cove surrounded by cliffs, creating a sense of seclusion and tranquillity. However, this isn’t your typical beach experience; reaching this shore requires a hike. Therefore, that’s why I’ve written this article, to ensure people are aware that it involves a short, steep hike, similar to many of Crete’s beaches. So, it’s advisable to avoid attempting it in your flip-flops.

How to reach Seitan Limania beach

Seitan Limania Beach is approximately 20 kilometres northeast of Chania. It’s situated near the village of Chordaki and can be accessed via a winding, paved road. While reaching the beach requires a short hike down a steep and rocky path, the breathtaking views and secluded atmosphere make it well worth the effort.

Here is the parking lot where you will arrive, regardless of the transportation option you choose, aside from taking the boat trip. From there, you can begin the hike.

BY BUS

Alternatively, if you opt for public transportation, reaching the parking lot is still achievable. One prominent bus service is KTEL, where you can explore available options. Additionally, you can utilize Rome2rio, a reliable website, to assess your transportation alternatives.

BY TAXI

Yet another option is to take a taxi, especially if you’re not too far away and can split the fare with others. You can explore their rates and options on these websites: Sougiataxi and Chaniataxi.

BY BOAT

Renting equipment or joining a boat trip is a way to get to Seitan Limania. You can explore available offers on these websites: here and here. This provides a unique experience and a different perspective compared to the upper parking lot. Additionally, it’s important to note that boats cannot reach the shore directly; they will stop somewhere near the bay, allowing you to enjoy swimming or snorkelling.

About the Seitan Limania beach hike

The hike begins from the parking area situated above the beach. Two distinct trails are leading down, each positioned on opposite sides of the cove. Both trails are less than 1 km in length, characterized by steep gradients and comprised of loose dirt, gravel, and rock. I chose the trail on the left side of the parking lot. It’s advisable to wear hiking shoes or, at the very least, sneakers, as the trail can become slippery at times. Additionally, you’ll find yourself surrounded by towering cliffs adorned with beautiful flora.

My experience

I was thoroughly impressed by the place; it truly stands out as a unique destination. The vibrant blue hues of the water, the rugged cliffs, and the invigorating hike contribute to its distinctiveness. Arriving around 10 am in June, I noticed only a few cars parked, and there were scant visitors along the shore, with half of the area shaded. Despite the coldness of the water, its clarity was remarkable, allowing easy observation of marine life. During the initial hours, when it was less crowded, the experience was delightful. However, the tranquil atmosphere shifted as more people arrived and the shade dissipated. Consequently, after a few hours, we opted to explore another location. Would I recommend the place? Absolutely, but I would suggest arriving early and not spending the entire day there. Additionally, if you enjoy hiking and similar environments, I would suggest visiting the Samaria Gorge.
