Northern Italy Road Trip Itinerary: Mountains and Lakes

Northern Italy is a paradise not only for nature lovers but for everyone seeking mesmerizing mountains, gorgeous lakes, and charming towns. If you’re planning a trip to Northern Italy, you’ve come to the right place, as some of these locations are sure to capture your heart. Here is my 9-day road trip itinerary in Northern Italy, focusing mainly on the breathtaking landscapes of mountains and lakes.

Day 1: Milano Bergamo to the Province of Belluno

On Saturday, our Italian adventure commenced as we landed in Milano Bergamo. Following the pickup of our rental car, we embarked on a 4-hour journey to our first accommodation in the Province of Belluno. The entirety of day one was primarily spent on the road, allowing us to catch glimpses of Italy from the comfort of our car.

Day 2: Hospital and Passo Giau, Northern Italy

As the sun rose on our second day, unexpected events took center stage. A visit to the hospital became an unplanned detour. Fortunately, it was a minor incident, swiftly resolved, allowing us to continue our journey. (Similar to a small grain of sand lodged in the upper interior eyelid. Despite our two-hour effort to remove it, a 30-minute visit to the hospital successfully resolved the issue.) So, following the hospital visit, we proceeded to pharmacies to acquire the necessary medicine. It’s important to note that despite the information available on Google, most pharmacies are closed on Sundays. Only one remains open, and the specific one may change each weekend. Therefore, it’s advisable to inquire with a local for the most up-to-date information.

After resolving these unplanned events, we finally headed to Giau Pass, a high mountain pass in the Dolomites. Arriving just before sunset, we managed a short hike to savor the breathtaking views. For those with more time, consider longer hikes like the Passo Giau – Cinque Torri loop, a 10km trail taking 3-4 hours.

• Passo Giau stands as a lofty mountain pass, reaching an elevation of 2,236 meters.
• From this vantage point, one can enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the neighboring Dolomite peaks.

Day 3: Val di Funes and Lake Carezza: Northern Italy Bliss

An eagerly awaited day unfolded as we drove to Val di Funes, a 24-km-long valley. Our initial destination was the Church of St. Magdalena, offering breathtaking views in its vicinity. For the best photo opportunities, I recommend a hike up the hills across from the church.

• Val di Funes is renowned for its iconic views, including the Church of St. Magdalena against the backdrop of the Odle Mountain Range.

The adventure then seamlessly transitioned to the enchanting Lake Carezza, celebrated for its vivid colours and captivating scenery.

• Known as the “Rainbow Lake” for its vibrant colors, Lake Carezza reflects the stunning hues of the surrounding forests and mountains.
• Legend has it that a beautiful mermaid named Ondina lived in the lake, making it a magical and romantic destination.
• The lake is fed by underground springs originating in the Latemar mountain range.

Day 4: Cadini di Misurina, Tre Cime and Adolf Munkel Weg

Day four unfolded with a focus on hiking. The famous Cadini di Misurina viewpoint, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains, set the stage for an immersive experience.

Location: Near Lake Misurina, Auronzo di Cadore, Veneto

• Cadini di Misurina is a stunning group of peaks in the Dolomites, near Lake Misurina.
• A relatively short hike leads to this panoramic spot, making it accessible to a wide range of hikers.

Following a brief pause to admire Tre Cime di Lavaredo, our journey seamlessly continued with a venture into the Adolf Munkel Weg, showcasing the diverse landscapes that define the Dolomites.

Despite the limitations on time preventing a more extended trek, the short hike brought forth no disappointment, as the surroundings continued to enchant with their beauty.

• The trail takes you through alpine meadows, showcasing the region’s diverse flora.
• While shorter options are available, the full loop offers a more immersive experience of the Dolomite landscapes.

Day 5: From Lake Fedaia and Lake Alleghe to Belluno Veronese

Transitioning to our second accommodation, we immersed ourselves in the tranquility of Lake Fedaia, surrounded by the majestic Marmolada glacier. Following our exploration of the surroundings, the chilly weather promptly urged us toward our next lake.

• Lake Fedaia is situated at an altitude of 2050 meters and is sourced by pure water from the Marmolada glacier.

Day 6: Lago di Tenno, Villa Canale and Riva del Garda

Day six unfolded with a wealth of experiences. To commence our day, we immersed ourselves in the beauty of Lake Tenno, a turquoise gem that stands as a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. Following that, we embarked on the 3 km loop hike around the lake, continuing our journey toward the medieval village of Canale di Tenno.

• Lago di Tenno is a crystal-clear mountain lake known for its vibrant turquoise waters.
• The surrounding medieval village of Canale adds to the picturesque setting.
• A serene and less crowded alternative to larger lakes, it provides a peaceful escape.

With time still on our side, we ventured further to Lake Garda, specifically to Riva del Garda. This bustling town provided a delightful contrast to the mountainous landscapes, offering a glimpse into the diverse wonders of Italy’s natural beauty.

• Nestled on the northern shores of Lake Garda, Riva del Garda is a captivating town.

Day 7: Sirmione: Jewel of Northern Italy

Sirmione, a gem on the shores of Lake Garda, beckoned us on the seventh day. As we wandered through its historic streets and admired the bougainvillea-adorned houses, the allure of this lakeside town became evident. Despite the crowds, Sirmione’s beauty and history left an indelible impression.

Day 8: Punta Larici Hike and Malcesine, Northern Italy

On the penultimate day, our adventure continued with the commencement of day eight, marked by a scenic hike offering a panoramic view of Lake Garda from above. Furthermore, the Punta Larici hike stands out as an excellent way to immerse oneself in nature and relish the breathtaking vistas of Lake Garda.

• The hike’s lenght is 6,4 km / 3,9 mile out-and-back
• The hike takes you through lush landscapes, offering stunning vistas of the lake and surrounding mountains.

As the day unfolded, we seamlessly wrapped up our outdoor excursion and smoothly transitioned to a visit to Malcesine. This charming town, adorned with a medieval castle and narrow streets, added a touch of cultural richness to our ongoing adventure.

• Malcesine is a quaint town on the eastern shore of Lake Garda.

On our final day, Desenzano del Garda greeted us, a town gracefully situated by the shores of Lake Garda.
