With its medieval streets, volcanic lake views, and relaxed atmosphere, it’s one of those under-the-radar places that might just become a highlight of your trip.

How I Discovered Bolsena
After wrapping up a 10-day trip in Bari, I flew into Bologna and drove straight to San Quirico for my Tuscany road trip. My goal was to focus on natural spots and small towns instead of big cities. One of the top items on my list was soaking in the warm waters of Cascate del Mulino, a stunning free hot spring in southern Tuscany. While looking up other nearby places, I came across Lake Bolsena, just across the regional border in Lazio. It was close, and the photos looked beautiful, so we decided to visit.
Bolsena instantly charmed me. It’s compact, walkable, and full of history. Since we visited in October, there were very few tourists. The peaceful streets, autumn colors, and crisp lake air made it a perfect escape.
Starting the Day at Lake Bolsena
We parked at a free lot near the castle and walked down to the lakeside promenade first. Along the way, we passed quiet stone alleys and a tree-lined avenue turning golden for autumn. The view of Lake Bolsena opens up slowly as you approach the water. Soon enough, you’re right at the shore, facing the glistening lake. If you turn back toward the town, you’ll spot the Rocca Monaldeschi della Cervara perched above the rooftops, a striking sight against the sky.
During summer, I can easily imagine this spot buzzing with swimmers, paddleboards, cafés, and water sports. Even in the off-season, it had that relaxed, lakeside vibe.

After enjoying the lake, we wandered back through the narrow streets of Bolsena and climbed uphill toward the fortress. The climb is short but steep in places, with amazing views at every turn.

Perched above the town, this medieval fortress is a highlight of any visit to Bolsena. Inside, you’ll find a small archaeological museum, while outside, the sweeping views over the lake and rooftops are reason enough to make the climb, whether you step inside or not.

If you’re not driving, Orvieto is the closest train-connected city, and from there, local buses run to Bolsena. You may also find bus connections from Rome or Viterbo, especially during the summer months. Please note that public transportation may require transfers and planning, especially on weekends.
