Cabana Plaiul Foii to Refugiul Șpirlea

We began our hike at the parking lot near Cabana Plaiul Foii, following the red trail marker (a red stripe on white). Soon enough, the trail led us onto a wide forest road lined with tall pine trees, accompanied by the calming sound of the Bârsa Tămășului River nearby.

At first, the path felt peaceful and easy. We passed a few locals out for a walk and even spotted campers enjoying the fresh mountain air. Overall, the ascent was gradual, making it a pleasant warm-up for what lay ahead.

Eventually, we reached a junction. We kept to the left, continuing on the red trail. (This is the same point where we would return at the end of the loop.) As we climbed higher, the dense forest began to thin, and glimpses of the Piatra Craiului ridgeline started to appear through the trees.

Just before reaching the hut, the trail became steeper and more rugged as it cut through a shaded forest section. After this short but challenging climb, we arrived at Refugiul Șpirlea (1,410 m), a rustic mountain shelter set in an open alpine meadow. From here, the views of the ridgeline were truly breathtaking. It was the perfect spot to take a break and soak in the scenery.

Șpirlea to Umerii Pietrei Craiului

After a well-deserved break, we continued our hike toward Umerii Pietrei Craiului. From the refuge, the trail became noticeably more challenging as it climbed toward the limestone ridgeline. The incline was steeper, and the terrain turned rockier in places, demanding more focus and effort.

We continued following the red stripe on a white background, the same trail marker as before. Along the way, we reached a signpost. Here, we turned right, staying on the marked trail.

As we climbed higher, the views became even more dramatic. Sheer limestone cliffs towered beside us, while deep forest valleys stretched out in the distance. Every step brought a new perspective on the incredible landscape.

Umerii Pietrei Craiului to Tămașel

Once we finished admiring the views from the Umerii Pietrei Craiului ridge, we began our descent toward Tămașel. The trail gradually dropped in elevation, winding through open areas with sweeping views of the valleys below. Each turn revealed more of the dramatic landscape, with forested slopes stretching into the distance.

Although this section was mostly downhill, it still required attention due to uneven terrain and a few steeper parts. The mountain silence, broken only by the wind and the sound of distant birds, made the descent feel calm and rewarding.

Tămașel to Cabana Plaiul Foii

After soaking in the mountain views, we turned our backs to the ridgeline and gradually re-entered the forest, beginning the descent. Along this stretch, we came across Izvorul Oțețelei (Oțețelei Spring), a refreshing spring that was especially welcome on a hot summer day. From here, the trail continues steadily downhill through the forest.

Although it might seem like an easy descent, your legs will still get a workout. Some parts are steep and uneven, so careful footing is important. The cool shade and forest sounds make this final section peaceful and rewarding.
